Please mark your calendars for two SST meetings this semester.
Meeting 1: Creating a Culture of Mentoring at Iowa
February 28, 1-2:30 pm
Black Box Theatre, 360 IMU
Mentoring is a frequently discussed and sometimes elusive student success strategy. The current UI strategic plan mentions mentoring in the following contexts:
Strategy: Prepare students to be experts in their disciplines and leaders in their fields.
Critical Task: Embed more career-readiness, alumni engagement and mentoring, and capstone courses within majors
Strategy: Become a Research I institution of choice for undergraduate students aspiring to pursue graduate or professional education.
Critical Task: Expand undergraduate research programs and faculty-student mentoring in health science and professional colleges
Strategy: Create pathways for students to pursue health careers and remain in Iowa.
Critical Task: Improve mentoring for first-generation and underrepresented minority students interested in health careers
The next Student Success Team meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to discuss creating a culture of mentoring at Iowa including:
- A brief overview of current state (established pipeline and mentoring programs)
- A discussion of demand for mentoring: for whom and by whom?
- Potential strategic opportunities for creating a culture of mentoring
- Next steps
